新型コロナウイルスの深刻な影響を受ける中南米諸国のうち、ペルーやブラジルなど五カ国で今年、コロナによる死因が一位になっているとの調査結果を米公共ラジオ（ＮＰＲ）がまとめた。……調査は、ＮＰＲが十二月中旬までの世界保健機関（ＷＨＯ）のデータなどを分析。死因でコロナが一位だったのは、ほかにチリ、エクアドル、パナマだった。
五カ国のうち、コロナによる死亡率がもっとも高かったペルーでは、百万人当たり千百五人がコロナで死亡した計算。次いでブラジルが八百五十一人だった。
感染者、死者とも世界最多の米国では、コロナは死因の二位。中南米以外で、コロナが死因のトップとなったのは欧州ベルギーだけだった。

この研究はオランダの科学専門誌「環境インターナショナル」にイタリアの研究チームが発表したものです。それによりますと、ローマの病院で出産した女性６人の胎盤を調べたところ、４人から合わせて１２個のマイクロプラスチックの粒子が検出されました。胎盤からマイクロプラスチックが検出されたのは初めてだということです。……研究チームは、マイクロプラスチックが胎盤に存在することによる健康への直接の影響は分からないとしていますが、マイクロプラスチックの化学物質が将来的に胎児の免疫機能に悪影響を及ぼす可能性もあり、「大きな懸念」だとしています。

Taiwan reported Tuesday its first locally transmitted case of the novel coronavirus since April, ending a 253-day streak without domestic transmission.
Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung told a press conference that the new case was confirmed as a Taiwanese woman in her 30s who had close contact with a New Zealand pilot in his 60s, whose infection was confirmed Sunday.
The last time Taiwan reported a local transmission was April 12. Taiwan saw its first local case on Jan. 28.

The plan means that Hanzawa, 55, will become the first managing executive officer to directly assume the post of president and CEO at the bank, the sources said... Hanzawa entered the former Mitsubishi Bank in 1988, engaging in corporate planning for many years. He currently serves as chief compliance officer.
At Mitsubishi Bank, he was a contemporary of Jun Ikeido, who later became a novelist, the original author of “Hanzawa Naoki,” a popular television drama series featuring bankers.

A man who sued his parents for getting rid of his pornography collection has won a lawsuit in western Michigan and can seek compensation.
U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney ruled in favor of David Werking, who said his parents had no right to throw out his collection. He lived at their Grand Haven home for 10 months after a divorce before moving to Muncie, Indiana.
Werking said boxes of films and magazines worth an estimated $29,000 were missing.

Researchers found that kangaroos "intentionally" communicated with humans -- a behavior that was previously thought to be reserved for domesticated animals, like dogs, horses or goats.
Experts from London's University of Roehampton and the University of Sydney set up a task, known as "the unsolvable problem task," where they presented kangaroos with food trapped inside a plastic container.
After trying, and failing, to open the boxes, the kangaroos turned their gaze on a nearby human -- and sometimes even nudged or scratched them to ask for help, researchers said.

Finance Minister Taro Aso and education minister Koichi Hagiuda agreed Thursday to reduce the maximum number of students per class at public elementary schools to 35 by fiscal 2025 from the current 40... The government will aim to secure enough teachers to deal with the smaller classes over the five years from April 2021. The reduction in class sizes will be implemented gradually, starting from lower grades.
The maximum number of elementary school children currently allowed in one class stands at 40, except for first-grade classes, whose number was reduced to 35 in fiscal 2011.
The planned move will be the largest-scale elementary school class size reduction in about 40 years.

A man in his 20s was referred to prosecutors Thursday by Tokyo police for allegedly posting hateful messages on social media against Hana Kimura, a cast member on the popular reality TV show "Terrace House" who died earlier this year in an apparent suicide.
The man, from the western Japan prefecture of Osaka, is suspected of having cyberbullied Kimura on Twitter by anonymously and repeatedly posting malicious comments, such as "Hey, when are you going to die?" according to investigative sources.
The highest grossing film in the history of Japan, the Oscar-winning Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away, 2001), has revised up its collection after new screenings in the country this year.
The film production company Toho has updated the film’s collection from 30.8 billion yen (244 million euros / 297 million dollars) to 31 thousand 680 million (251.5 million euros / 305.7 million dollars), according to data from the agency specialized Kogyo, which measures attendance and box office in Japan.
The new figure, which emerged on Tuesday night, includes the collection obtained in 2020 with the projection between June and August in more than 370 Japanese theaters of the aforementioned animated film and three other works by the famous Studio Ghibli on the occasion of the postponement of dozens of premieres for the COVID-19 pandemic.
