Record numbers of would-be students have applied to start university this autumn  ahead of the tuition fee rise, as new figures fuel fears that tens of thousands will be left disappointed.
Some 583,500 people have submitted applications, an extra 28,000 compared to the same point last year - a rise of 5.1 per cent,  according to statistics published by admissions service Ucas.
