AFP: Obama says 34,000 US troops to leave Afghanistan

US President Barack Obama announced that 34,000 US troops will withdraw from Afghanistan in the next year and vowed the grueling, bloody US conflict there would end by late 2014. "After a decade of grinding war, our brave men and women in uniform are coming home," Obama said in his State of the Union address, winning applause and a standing ovation from lawmakers.

The lower house of Parliament, after more than 100 hours of debate, approved a law on Tuesday that would legalize same-sex marriage and give the same rights to all married couples to adopt children. The bill, promoted by President François Hollande and his Socialist Party, which controls the legislature, passed by 329 to 229 in the National Assembly, despite loud opposition from religious leaders and from the center-right. The bill will come before the Senate on April 2, where it is also expected to pass.
