China is stepping up its training for a "short, sharp war" designed to seize the disputed Senkaku islands from Japan, according to the head of US naval intelligence in the Pacific.

An economic adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lodged a formal objection with the Wall Street Journal over an article he says distorted his comments concerning war-related Yasukuni Shrine.
