8chan: Where are users going now? - BBC News

On Monday, cyber-security company Cloudflare withdrew its protection services from 8chan and minutes later the site was unavailable... Losing Cloudflare's protection made 8chan vulnerable to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. The website was bombarded with traffic that overwhelmed its servers, rendering it inaccessible.
In response, 8chan switched to BitMitigate, a cyber-protection service owned by a web hosting company called Epik.
BitMitigate also provided protection to the neo-Nazi site the Daily Stormer.

People walking in Times Square were sent into a widespread panic Tuesday night after what sounded like multiple gunshots rang out in the crowded tourist destination - only later to be ruled as motorcycle backfire, police said... Multiple backfires on the road happened near Eighth Avenue and West 42nd Street, according to the NYPD. Several ambulances and police patrol vehicles were still on the scene an hour after the panic calmed down.

Hong Kong police on Tuesday (Aug 6) said 148 people were arrested during running battles with protesters the day before, the largest daily toll since huge pro-democracy protests kicked off two months ago.
On Monday, Hong Kong buckled under a citywide strike followed by the most widespread and sustained clashes so far, with tear gas fired at more than a dozen locations against increasingly violent hardcore protesters.

Rome's 'tourist police' have been moving people on from the famous Spanish Steps as part of a crackdown on unruly visitors, witnesses say... At mid morning the 135 steps, usually filled round the clock with people taking pictures or simply a rest, were practically deserted, the reporter said. He counted eight police officers moving people along.
The patrols are part of Rome's latest crackdown on bad behaviour in the city centre, timed to coincide with the peak tourist season.

McDonald’s decision to swap recyclable plastic straws for “eco-friendly” paper versions which cannot be recycled was today branded “a silly stunt.”
It dumped the 1.8million plastic straws used by its UK restaurants each day as part of a huge green drive.
