Net migration has fallen to its lowest level for a decade, driven by a decline in the number of overseas students which campaigners warn could cost the UK economy ￡725m in lost income. The Conservative party welcomed the slide in net migration to 153,000 in 2012, from a peak of 255,000 in 2010, which increases the probability that it will meet its “tens of thousands” target reduction by the next election.
