Venezuela: UN report accuses Maduro of ‘gross violations’ against dissenters | The Guardian

The UN has issued a withering appraisal of the human rights situation in Venezuela, as horrific details emerged of the injuries inflicted on a navy captain allegedly tortured to death during a crackdown on alleged plotters against Nicolás Maduro.
A report by UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet – which follows a three-day mission to the South American country last month – accuses Maduro’s security forces of committing a series of “gross violations” against Venezuelan dissenters and urges him to disband a notorious special forces group blamed for a wave of politically-motivated killings.
The 16-page document also contains chilling details of the techniques allegedly being used by Venezuela’s security and intelligence services to interrogate and intimidate members of the political opposition, as Maduro battles to retain power.

Hong Kong protests: police make first arrests after storming of parliament | The Guardian

At least 12 people have been arrested in the first wave of detentions linked to anti-government protests in Hong Kong that led to the storming and vandalising of the city’s parliament.
At least 11 men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of trying to disrupt celebrations marking the 22nd anniversary of the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule on Monday.

Women's World Cup: Alex Morgan divides opinion with tea-drinking celebration - CNN

The US Women's National Soccer team has caused quite the stir with its celebrations at the Women's World Cup, and Alex Morgan became the latest to milk a goal in Lyon on Tuesday.
The USWNT's players received plenty of flack for exuberantly celebrating during their 13-0 thrashing of Thailand, and Morgan's tea-drinking mime has further divided opinion.
On the occasion of her 30th birthday, Morgan was seemingly quick to reference the famous British tradition -- raising her fingers to her mouth -- after she scored the winner in the USWNT's 2-1 victory over England, a game which saw the Americans reach their third straight World Cup final.

Florijana Ismaili death: body of Swiss women's footballer found in Lake Como

The body of international women's footballer, Florijana Ismaili, was found yesterday, four days after she disappeared in Lake Como, Italy.
The Swiss player was capped 33 times for her country in the sport, but didn't feature in the 2019 Women's World Cup after Switzerland did not qualify. She was declared missing on Saturday 29 June, having jumped off a rented boat into the lake and failing to resurface.
Italian search and rescue teams began looking for Florijana's body, and eventually found her at 204 metres down in the lake.
