Hong Kong protester shot in street confrontation with police | Al Jazeera

Hong Kong police opened fire and wounded at least one protester during a fracas broadcast live on Facebook, as chaos erupted across China's self-governing territory during rush hour on Monday.
Footage showed a police officer drawing his weapon in the eastern district of Sai Wan Ho as he tried to detain a masked man at a road junction that had been blocked by protesters.
Another masked man then approached the officer and appeared to get shot in the chest area, falling to the ground, clutching his left side. He was later admitted to hospital where he was reported to be in critical condition.

Alibaba's Singles' Day sales hit $23 billion in first nine hours | The Japan Times

Chinese retailer Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. said Monday that sales logged from its annual Singles’ Day shopping blitz crossed the $30 billion mark late Monday afternoon, putting the event on track to set a record in its 11th year.
Akin to Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States, Singles’ Day has been promoted as a shopping festival by Alibaba Chairman and Chief Executive Daniel Zhang since 2009, growing rapidly to become the world’s biggest online sales event.
Also dubbed “Double Eleven,” the festival’s name originates from the calendar date Nov. 11, with the four ones in 11/11 signifying being single.

Bolivian president Evo Morales resigns after election result dispute | The Guardian

Evo Morales has announced he will resign as president of Bolivia after the military called for him to step down and the police withdrew their support following weeks of unrest over disputed election results.
In a televised address, Bolivia’s president of nearly 14 years said he was stepping down for the “good of the country”. but added in an attack on opponents whom he had accused of a coup attempt: “Dark forces have destroyed democracy.”
Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous leader, later said on Twitter that the police had an “illegal” warrant for his arrest and that “violent groups” had attacked his home in Cochabamba, a city in central Bolivia.

Roman Polanski Accused of 1975 Rape - The New York Times

A French photographer has accused the director Roman Polanski of violently raping her in 1975 in his ski chalet in Switzerland when she was 18, adding to the list of several women who have publicly accused Mr. Polanski of sexually abusing them as teenagers.
The director, who is preparing to release a film on Wednesday dealing with themes of injustice, “firmly denied” the latest accusation, his lawyer said.

Planet Mercury passes across the face of the Sun - BBC News

Mercury has made a rare transit, where the planet passes across the face of the Sun as seen from Earth.
During the transit, Mercury appeared as a dark silhouetted disc against the bright surface of our star.
There are 14 transits in this century; the last before this was in 2016, but the next event will not occur until 2032.
