U.S. Prosecutors Probe Huawei on New Allegations of Technology Theft - WSJ

U.S. prosecutors are looking into additional instances of alleged technology theft by Huawei Technologies Co., according to people familiar with the matter, potentially expanding beyond existing criminal cases against the Chinese telecommunications giant.
Among the situations being examined are episodes in which Huawei was accused of stealing intellectual property from multiple people and companies over several years, as well as how the company went about recruiting employees from competitors, these people said.

South Korea's top court on Thursday sent back jailed former President Park Geun-hye's corruption case to a lower court for separate trials for her previously-convicted charges, a ruling that could increase her already-lengthy prison term... An appellate court earlier sentenced Park to 25 years in prison over bribery, extortion, abuse of power and other charges. That was an extension of a 24-year prison term set by a district court.

But the Supreme Court ordered the Seoul High Court to deal with Park's bribery charge separately from other charges.

Osaka University team conducts world's first iPS transplant for corneal disease | The Japan Times

A research team from Osaka University said Thursday it had conducted the world’s first transplant of corneal tissues using artificially derived stem cells in July.
The university’s team, led by Koji Nishida, may have created a new treatment for those suffering from corneal disease, as current treatment procedures involve waiting for corneal donations from deceased donors... The patient in the July surgery, a woman in her 40s who suffered from corneal epithelial stem cell deficiency, was discharged from the hospital Aug. 23 after receiving the operation on her left eye on July 25. Her eyesight has improved considerably and there have been no problems detected so far, the team said.

In Omachi, Saga Prefecture, Juntendo hospital was isolated due to flooding, with 215 people including patients becoming stranded, according to the prefectural government. The prefectural government also said water that contains oil leaking from a nearby plant was flowing into the hospital. It is gathering information on the situation.

Arctic team maps five islands found by Russian student - BBC News

A Russian Arctic expedition has mapped five small islands in the far north, discovered by a student analysing a glacier's retreat in satellite photos.
Before Marina Migunova's discovery in 2016 the islands were hidden under the Nansen Glacier, also known as Vylka, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.
Her discovery was part of her final coursework at the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy in St Petersburg.
