Covid-19: Global coronavirus cases pass 50 million - BBC News

The total of confirmed coronavirus cases has surged past 50 million following record numbers of new cases in several countries.
More than 1.25 million people have now died after contracting the virus, according to Johns Hopkins university.
But the numbers are thought to be higher because of insufficient testing in many countries.

Brexit: EU and UK negotiators resume trade talks in London - BBC News

EU and UK officials have resumed trade talks in London at the start of another key week for the negotiations.
They are trying to bridge what the two sides have said are still significant differences on fishing quotas and competition issues.
Boris Johnson said on Sunday that the "outlines" of an agreement were clear and a deal was "there to be done".
But he has insisted the UK is prepared to leave the single market and customs union on 31 December without agreement.

EU sanctions on Lukashenko, son over Belarus crackdown | DW

The European Union officially imposed sanctions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Friday, while also blacklisting his 44-year-old son Viktor, who serves as the president's security adviser.
The move comes in response to "violent repression and intimidation of peaceful demonstrators, opposition members and journalists" in Belarus, where an anti-Lukashenko protest movement has been raging for months, according to an EU statement. Both Alexander and Viktor Lukashenko are now banned from obtaining EU visas, and their assets in the bloc have been frozen.

Joe Biden, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. presidency, and running mate Kamala Harris delivered victory speeches on Nov. 7 after being projected to clear the 270 electoral vote threshold needed to unseat incumbent Donald Trump.
Harris spoke first, telling supporters about the generations of women -- "Black women, Asian, White, Latina and Native American women" -- who came before her and "paved the way for this moment tonight." She will be the country's first female, as well as Black and Asian American, vice president.

A small Irish town claims victory after Biden wins - CNN

The stars and stripes have been fluttering all week on the streets of Ballina -- the town of just 10,000 in the west of Ireland where US president-elect Joe Biden's Irish ancestors hail from.
Ten of the former vice president's 16 great-great-grandparents were born in Ireland, according to the Irish for Biden campaign, with Edward Blewitt, Biden's great-great-great-grandfather, providing the Ballina connection.
