Huawei Technologies Co. is preparing for a drop in international smartphone shipments of 40 million to 60 million as the Trump administration’s blacklisting hammers one of the Chinese tech giant’s most important businesses... On Monday, billionaire Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei confirmed the company had endured about a 40% drop in smartphone shipments abroad, which a company spokesman said referred to a fall over the past month. Ren expects Washington’s sanctions to curtail its overall revenue by about $30 billion over the coming two years, wiping out the networking giant’s growth.

Hong Kong 'Umbrella Movement' activist Joshua Wong released from prison

Joshua Wong, a leading figure in Hong Kong's 2014 Umbrella Movement demonstrations, was released from prison on Monday and vowed to soon join the latest round of protests... Wong, 22, served a two-month sentence for contempt related to his involvement in the 2014 protests advocating a more democratic elections process in the former British colony.
Wong's sentence was reduced from three months because he was only a teenager when he was arrested.

China's Xi Jinping to make first official trip to North Korea | Al Jazeera

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit North Korea for two days from Thursday, state media in both countries reported on Monday, making him the first Chinese leader to visit in 14 years.
Neighbouring China is reclusive North Korea's only major ally, and the visit comes amid renewed tensions between the United States and North Korea over efforts to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.

M6.7 quake hits off Japan's northeastern Yamagata Pref., tsunami advisory issued - The Mainichi

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.7 hit Tuesday off Japan's northeastern prefecture of Yamagata and a tsunami warning was issued, the weather agency said.
The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at around 10:22 p.m. at a depth of about 14 kilometers, was off the prefecture, the agency said, adding that despite the warning there is no fear of major damage.

Indiana man offered millions of dollars to teens to kill Cynthia Hoffman, new charges say - Anchorage Daily News

A 21-year-old Indiana man implicated this week in the killing of Cynthia Hoffman promised millions of dollars to the teens who killed her in exchange for images of the killing, new charges against him claim.
Investigators believe Darin Schilmiller of New Salisbury, Indiana, posed as a millionaire named “Tyler” online and offered 18-year-old Denali Brehmer $9 million or more to “rape and murder someone in Alaska," according to court documents indicting the six people who are accused in Hoffman’s death.
In return, Brehmer was supposed to send photos and videos of the killing back to Schilmiller, according to the court documents.
