米中両国は11日にワシントンで開いた通商問題に関する閣僚級協議で、貿易戦争の休戦につながる「第１段階」といえる部分的な枠組みで合意に達した。トランプ米大統領は、合意文書の作成には３週間から５週間を要する見通しだが、中国の習近平国家主席と来月にも署名できる可能性があると述べた。
中国は合意の一環として、米国産農産品の購入を大きく増やし、知的財産権を巡る一定の措置、金融サービスと為替に関する譲歩に同意するとトランプ大統領が11日にホワイトハウスで明らかにした。これと引き換えに米政府は、部分合意の確定に伴い、15日に予定していた追加関税の引き上げを先送りする。だが、中国から輸入する製品のほぼ全てに対象を拡大する制裁関税「第４弾」の発動中止は決めていない。

He was awarded the prize for his efforts to "achieve peace and international cooperation".
Mr Abiy's peace deal with Eritrea ended a 20-year military stalemate following their 1998-2000 border war.

Poland is being taken to the EU’s highest court over a law said to violate the principle of judicial independence.
Just three days before parliamentary elections on Sunday, the European commission announced it was referring Poland to the European court of justice over its disciplinary regime for Polish judges.
Under the law Polish judges can be investigated and sanctioned for their court rulings.

The principal of a public elementary school in the city of Kobe, western Japan, has apologized about a case of a teacher who was repeatedly bullied by four other teachers at the school. A male teacher in his 20s at Higashi Suma Elementary School was reportedly bullied by three male colleagues in their 30s and a female colleague in her 40s. He is said to have been forced to eat extremely spicy curry on multiple occasions while being physically restrained.

The Bank of England has unveiled the design of the new ￡20 note, which features the painter JMW Turner as announced previously. The bank said it will be its most secure note yet.
The hard-wearing polymer note, which will be issued from 20 February 2020, has two windows and a two-colour foil. This design, used for the first time, makes the note very difficult to counterfeit, the central bank said on Thursday.
The new note, like the polymer ￡10, will also contain a tactile feature to help vision-impaired people identify the denomination.

Bangladeshi economist and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been issued with an arrest warrant after failing to appear at a hearing over the sacking of workers at a company he heads, officials said Thursday.
A judge at a court in Dhaka issued the order Wednesday as sacked workers from Grameen Communications (GC) lodged a complaint saying they were fired because they set up a trade union, court clerk M. Nuruzzaman told AFP.
Yunus, who is chairman of GC, did not attend the hearing, as he was abroad. The chief executive officer and a senior manager at the company appeared at the court and secured bail, Nuruzzaman said.

Nissan Motor Co. issued its starkest warning yet against a no-deal Brexit, saying any tariffs on auto exports to the European Union are likely to render its U.K. operations unviable.
The imposition of World Trade Organisation rules with a 10% duty on U.K.-built cars shipped to the EU would be impossible to offset through cost cuts, Nissan Europe Chairman Gianluca de Ficchy said Thursday at the company’s Sunderland factory in northeast England.
While it is impossible to say how disruptive a hard Brexit would be, the impact of tariffs is more certain and would put the future of Britain’s biggest auto plant in doubt, De Ficchy said.

A federal judge on Monday said eight years of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tax returns must be provided to Manhattan prosecutors, forcefully rejecting the president’s argument that he was immune from criminal investigations.
Trump’s returns will not be turned over immediately, after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan granted the president’s request to temporarily block the order, handed down by U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero.

US troops began withdrawing from northeast Syria ahead of a Turkish invasion that Kurdish fighters say will overturn the victory over the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) armed group.
Washington's forces "will not support or be involved in the [Turkish] operation" and "will no longer be in the immediate area", White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.
It was not clear whether that meant the United States would withdraw its 1,000 or so troops completely from northern Syria.

The average price of a Manhattan apartment is still not cheap - falling to $1.7 million. But brokers and real estate analysts say there is little sign of a bottom after nearly two years of declines.

Working-level nuclear talks in Sweden between officials from Pyongyang and Washington have broken off, North Korea’s top negotiator said late on Saturday, dashing prospects for an end to months of stalemate.
The talks, at an isolated conference center on the outskirts of Stockholm, were the first such formal discussion since U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in June and agreed to restart negotiations that stalled after a failed summit in Vietnam in February.
The protests in Hong Kong are a "Hong Kong-version of a colour revolution" and cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely, China has said in its harshest comments yet on the violence in the city.
The comments from the central government's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) signal a turning point and show that Beijing's patience is wearing thin, said experts who believe they could herald increasingly hardline actions from the mainland in the days ahead.

Police say a woman in her 20s died from her burns in hospital. The victim was a studio employee and had been on the first floor of the building at the time of the attack.
She suffered burns all over her body before escaping the building.
▽Six elephants die at Khao Yai waterfall
A team of park officials who were pushing elephants back into the forest from Highway 3077 in Prachin Buri heard loud elephant calls coming from Samor Poon creek near the waterfall at around 3am on Saturday.
At around 6am, they went to check and found an elephant calf, aged around 3 years, drowned on the first tier of the waterfall. Two elephants were spotted trying to help the calf. They looked exhausted.
The officials went down to the area below the waterfall and found five more elephants drowned, said Khanchit Srinoppawan, chief of the national park.

A royal palace in Nigeria has announced that its resident tortoise has died following a short illness, saying it was a remarkable 344 years old.
The tortoise, named Alagba, meaning elderly one, lived in the palace of Ogbomoso in Oyo state... The revered reptile was apparently brought to the palace by the kingdom's third leader, Isan Okumoyede, who reigned from 1770 to 1797.
However, Isan Okumoyede reigned just over 200 years ago. This means the tortoise would have already been 100 when she was found, for her to have reached the grand old age of 344.
