▽Hong Kong Invokes Emergency Powers to Ban Masks at Protests - Bloomberg
Hong Kong invoked emergency powers for the first time in more than half a century to ban face masks for protesters after months of unrest, prompting demonstrators to occupy downtown streets.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Friday the move was necessary to stem increased violence in recent weeks, including attacks by protesters using petrol bombs, corrosive liquids and other weapons. The prohibition on face masks will deter violence and help police enforce the law, she said, adding that the measure didn’t mean Hong Kong was under a state of emergency.
The Tokyo District Court ruled Thursday against a government deportation order issued to a U.S. activist opposing dolphin hunts when he tried to enter Japan three years ago... According to the ruling, O’Barry sought to enter Japan on Jan. 18, 2016, at Narita International Airport for sightseeing but was denied entry.
He was deported on Feb. 5 after his appeal to enter the country was turned down.

An Ethiopian crown from the 18th century is to be returned to its home country after being hidden in a flat in the Netherlands for 21 years.
Ethiopian Sirak Asfaw fled to the Dutch port city of Rotterdam as a political refugee in the late 1970s and discovered the crown in a visitor's suitcase.
Mr Asfaw confronted the visitor about it when he realised it was stolen and has protected it since, but now feels it is safe to return the crown to Ethiopian authorities.

The high school student who was shot by police during a clash on Tuesday was prosecuted for assaulting police and rioting, according to police Thursday.
Tsang Chi-kin, 18, the first victim shot at by police with a live round since the anti-government demonstrations began in June, and six other men were being prosecuted in court for rioting and other crimes in relation to the Tuesday protest... The male teenager was critically wounded in the chest when he was shot by a riot police officer at close proximity, but he has been in stable condition since Wednesday after surgery, according to local media.
▽Cambodian court convicts 2 Japanese in murder of taxi driver - The Mainichi
Two Japanese men in their 20s were on Thursday convicted in the murder of a taxi driver in Cambodia's northwestern province of Siem Reap earlier this year and sentenced to at least a decade in prison.
Handing down the verdict, Um Chanthol, presiding judge of the Siem Reap Provincial Court, meted out a 13-year term to Ryuji Nakakuki and a 10-year term to his friend Reimon Ishida.
The pair were also ordered to pay compensation of 100 million riels (about $25,000) to the bereaved family.

North Korea said it test fired a new type of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) Wednesday, a day after Pyongyang and Washington agreed to resume nuclear talks.
The launch marks a departure from the tests of shorter range missiles North Korea has carried out in recent months.
State-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the new-type of SLBM was a "Pukguksong-3."

France’s highest appeals court on Tuesday rejected a bid by former President Nicolas Sarkozy to avoid facing trial over the alleged illegal financing of his failed re-election campaign in 2012.
The decision by the French “Cour de Cassation” means the case will now return to prosecutors who will decide whether Sarkozy should be tried. He denies any wrongdoing.

Kansai Electric Power Co. said Wednesday two executives who were responsible for its nuclear business both received more than 100 million yen ($929,000) as gifts from a former official of a town hosting one of its nuclear plants, as the utility disclosed additional information on the money scandal involving more than a dozen officials.
The disclosure has re-exposed the collusive ties between Japan's nuclear industry and government officials. Of the 318.45 million yen worth of gifts 20 people at Kansai Electric received, the largest amount of 123.67 million yen went to managing executive officer Satoshi Suzuki, followed by 110.57 million yen for former deputy president Hideki Toyomatsu, the company said.

▽18-year-old Hong Kong student shot in the left shoulder amid protest - The Straits Times
A Hong Kong police officer shot a protester with a live round on Tuesday (Oct 1) after his unit was attacked by demonstrators in Tsuen Wan district during sustained clashes in the city, a police spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the shot hit the shoulder of an 18-year-old man.
The wounded man received initial first aid from officers before paramedics arrived, and was then taken to Princess Margaret Hospital. He was later transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and underwent surgery. His parents were at the hospital, and sources said the bullet was removed from the man.

China has displayed new nuclear missiles in a show of military strength to mark 70 years of Communist rule.
In a parade in Beijing to mark seven decades since the founding of Communist China, two new nuclear missiles were on display.
One, the Dongfeng-41, is believed to have a range of up to 9,400 miles, which would make it the world’s longest-range military missile.
With the consumption tax rate rising from 8 percent to 10 percent Tuesday but with different rates for food and other daily items, consumers and store workers struggled to adjust.
Under a system intended to lighten the burden on low income households, tax rates for foods vary depending on where items are consumed. A meal eaten in a shop or restaurant is now taxed at 10 percent, but the rate remains at the previous 8 percent for takeout food.

Rome is trying to become more environmentally friendly by offering free metro tickets to travelers who re-cycle plastic bottles using machines set up in three of the Italian capital’s stations.
The initiative, which was launched in July, has proved so popular that 350,000 bottles have been recycled. It will soon be extended across the metro network and run until July 2020, the city’s public transport company ATAC says.

White House trade advisor Peter Navarro on Monday characterized recent reports that the U.S. is considering restrictions on Chinese companies as grossly inaccurate.
“The last time we talked, I proposed ‘Navarro’s Rule,’ which is that any story that comes from anonymous sources is likely to be fake news designed to part a fool from his money,” Navarro told CNBC. “And that story, which appeared in Bloomberg, I’ve read it far more carefully than it was written.”

The calved block covers 1,636 sq km in area - a little smaller than Scotland's Isle of Skye - and is called D28... Not since the early 1960s has Amery calved a bigger iceberg. That was a whopping 9,000 sq km in area.
