Japanese prosecutors indicted Wednesday a 42-year-old man over an arson attack in July last year on a Kyoto Animation Co. studio that killed 36 people and injured 33 others.
Shinji Aoba, who was arrested in May for perpetrating one of Japan's worst mass murders, has likely been determined by medical experts to be mentally competent based on his calculated actions, such as purchasing gasoline prior to the incident, meaning he can be held criminally liable for the attack.

A major Japanese cosmetics firm faced online boycott calls on Wednesday (Dec 16) after its CEO used a racial slur for Koreans, and boasted his firm was "pure Japanese".
DHC's Yoshiaki Yoshida made the comments in a message on the company's website in which he attacked rival Suntory, a major beverage manufacturer that competes with DHC in the health supplement sector.
The Hollywood megastar has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to enforce tight social-distancing rules during the filming, taking place in Britain.
And he flew into a rage after spotting two of the crew standing within two metres of each other.
An audio tape captured Cruise shouting: “If I see you do it again, you’re f***ing gone. And if anyone in this crew does it, that’s it - and you too and you too. And you, don’t you ever f***ing do it again.”

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to pick former South Bend, Indiana, mayor Pete Buttigieg to head the Transportation Department, according to three people familiar with the plans.
Buttigieg, one of Biden's rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, was a breakout star of the primaries, sharing victory in the nation's first caucus with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. He suspended his campaign before Super Tuesday and endorsed Biden.

Parliament President David Sassoli presented the 2020 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Veranika Tsapkala in Brussels on 16 December.
They received the Sakharov Prize on behalf of the democratic opposition in Belarus, represented by the Coordination Council, an initiative of brave women and political and civil society figures.

▽Japan to halt travel program over New Year holidays amid virus surge
The Japanese government will suspend its subsidy program for promoting domestic tourism nationwide during the New Year holidays amid a surge in coronavirus cases, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Monday, upending efforts to spur an economic recovery despite the pandemic.
The "Go To Travel" campaign will be halted from Dec. 28 to Jan. 11, and whether to restart the program will be decided at that point based on the latest situation, Suga told a meeting of the government's task force on the coronavirus response.

Japan's Supreme Court has ordered the government to pay more than 22 million dollars in compensation to former construction workers who developed lung diseases caused by asbestos.

A Japanese court on Tuesday sentenced a man dubbed Japan's "Twitter killer" to death for the 2017 serial murders of nine people who posted suicidal thoughts on social media.
Takahiro Shiraishi, 30, was found guilty in the high-profile case by the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Court of murdering, dismembering and storing the bodies of the nine in his apartment near Tokyo.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced Monday that it has found black sand grains from the asteroid Ryugu in the capsule ejected from the Hayabusa2 space probe.
With the preliminary discovery, the most crucial mission of Hayabusa2 to bring back to Earth samples from the asteroid - a six-year, 5.24 billion-kilometer journey - has been proved successful... According to JAXA, the capsule has a two-layer structure, and the black grains of sand were found on the bottom of the container outside the small box to hold samples.
The amount is yet unknown, but it is enough to be visible, making it highly likely that a much larger amount of samples than the first mission was collected

The U.N.-backed Lebanon Tribunal on Friday sentenced a Hezbollah member convicted of conspiring to kill former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri in a 2005 bombing to five terms of life imprisonment.
Salim Jamil Ayyash was found guilty in August of homicide and committing a terrorist act over the deaths of Hariri and 21 others in the attack on Beirut’s waterfront.
The trial was conducted in absentia and Ayyash remains at large. Three alleged accomplices were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

South Korean lawmakers passed a bill to stop the country’s spy agency from investigating domestic activities related to North Korea on Sunday, instead transferring that power to the national police. The new law means that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) will no longer be able to conduct anti-communist investigations as of 2024. In the past, these investigations included those that looked into people’s alleged and illegal ties to North Korea.
Approval ratings for the administration of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga dropped 17 percentage points from a previous poll conducted on Nov. 7 to 40%, in a nationwide public opinion survey carried out by the Mainichi Shimbun and the Social Survey Research Center on Dec. 12.
The percentage of people who said they disapproved of the administration rose from the previous 36% to 49%, marking the first time that the ratio of those who do not support the administration surpassed support since its launch in September. At its start, 64% of those surveyed said they approved of the administration, while 27% said they disapproved.

As a member of the national team, Goromaru contributed to Japan's historic victory over powerhouse South Africa in the 2015 World Cup in England. He was chosen among 15 of the best players.

A majority of the nearly 2,000 employees, who were exiting the facility after completing their night-shift, went on a rampage destroying the company’s furniture, assembly units and even attempted to set fire to vehicles.

Indonesian police have arrested a man believed to be the military leader of the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah network who has eluded capture since 2003, authorities said.
Aris Sumarsono, known as Zulkarnaen, was arrested late on Thursday by counterterrorism police without resistance in a raid at a house in East Lampung district on Sumatra island, said National Police spokesperson Ahmad Ramadhan.
Zulkarnaen is suspected of being involved in the making of bombs used in a series of attacks, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, and a 2003 attack on the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, that killed 12, Ramadhan said.

A wealthy Tory MP is facing demands to pay reparations for his family’s part in the Caribbean slave trade after the Observer revealed that he now controls the plantation where his ancestors created the first slave-worked sugar plantation in the British empire almost 400 years ago.
The MP for South Dorset, Richard Drax, has inherited the 250-hectare Drax Hall plantation in Barbados from his father, inquiries by the Observer have established. His father died in 2017. Drax has not yet declared the land or its properties in the parliamentary register of members’ interests.

Iran has executed a dissident journalist, a year after he was seized by the country’s elite Revolutionary Guards in Iraq and forcibly repatriated to face trial.
Ruhollah Zam, 47, was hanged early on Saturday morning, Iranian state media reported. His family visited him the previous day, but prison and judicial authorities had not told them or him about the scheduled execution, Amnesty International said... During the 2017 protests, he shared the timings and other details of demonstrations, as well as embarrassing information about officials and direct challenges to Iran’s Shia theocracy... In October 2019, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said it had trapped Zam in a “complex operation using intelligence deception”. It did not say where the operation took place, but rights groups said he was in Iraq at the time.

Chinese authorities have detained a citizen who works for Bloomberg news in Beijing on suspicion of endangering national security, in the latest incident to increase pressure on foreign media outlets in China.
Haze Fan was seen being escorted from her apartment by plainclothes officials on Monday, the news agency said. Her last contact with a Bloomberg colleague that day had been at 11.30am. China’s foreign ministry confirmed her arrest and the charges on Friday.
▽Woman Dies after Taking Tainted Onychomycosis Drug - JIJI PRESS
A woman in her 70s died in Japan Thursday after taking an onychomycosis drug tainted with a sleep-inducing component, the maker of the medication, Kobayashi Kako Co., said Saturday.
The woman died at a hospital in the Tokyo metropolitan area after taking the itraconazole tablet 50 MEEK antifungal medication, according to the pharmaceutical company, based in Awara, Fukui Prefecture, central Japan.
Kobayashi Kako said it will investigate the causal relationship between the death and the drug. It was the first death linked to the drug. The company is voluntarily recalling the medication.

Joby Aviation, an electric passenger aircraft developer, said on Tuesday it would take over Uber Technologies Inc’s flying taxi unit, Elevate, the second cash-burning business the ride-hailing company has sold off in two days.
Joby did not disclose the terms of the deal, but said Uber had also agreed to invest a further $75 million in the Santa Cruz, California-based company, bringing its total investment to $125 million. Joby has raised more than $720 million in funding since it was founded in 2009, most of it from Toyota Motor Corp.

A research team including renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei announced Friday a significant computing breakthrough, achieving quantum computational advantage.
The team established a quantum computer prototype, named "Jiuzhang," via which up to 76 photons were detected. The study was published in Science magazine online.
This achievement marks that China has reached the first milestone on the path to full-scale quantum computing -- a quantum computational advantage, also known as "quantum supremacy," which indicates an overwhelming quantum computational speedup.

The Tokyo District Court on Dec. 8 ordered the supermarket to pay about 580,000 yen ($5,570) in compensation to the man.
Presiding Judge Ayako Nagatsuma noted that the incident occurred “at a peak hour” and the supermarket “should have been more vigilant” in ensuring customer safety.

Nestle Japan Ltd. has announced a decision to suspend sales of all of its Milo chocolate malt beverage powder products due to difficulties meeting a surge in demand partly caused by social media posts.
The unit of Swiss food giant Nestle SA saw Milo demand grow seven-fold year on year following Twitter or other social media posts, including one saying that "it helps you wake up better" and another saying "It's good for anemia." The products also attracted attention from people staying home due to the coronavirus crisis... Milo started attracting strong demand in Japan around July on the back of the social media posts.
The company halted sales of the mainstay 240-gram product in September. Although its shipments were resumed on Nov. 16, Nestle Japan continued to see demand far exceed its supply capacity and decided on the full sales suspension as a result.
